Mr. Marvin Mixon from American Legion Post 30 came to the Lower School on Aug. 14 to explain the heritage of the flag to 62 fifth graders. Every year, the fifth graders are responsible for lifting and lowering the flag. So, Mr. Mixon came to demonstrate proper flag etiquette and answer flag-related questions. He was very patriotic and encouraged the students to take a moment to think about the meaning and significance of the flag. The students really responded when Mr. Mixon explained his tour of duty in Vietnam. He had to fight back tears as he explained why the flag’s symbolism is so important in our lives as American citizens. He told the students that the men and women that have served, are serving, and will serve our country are the reason we fly the flag. After that very touching speech, the students went to the flagpole to practice their new skill. Many thanks to Mr. Mixon and his helper for both inspiring and teaching our students about the flag and why we are all proud to be Americans.
